Broadway actress Sharon Wheatley, currently appearing in Come from Away as Diane, the role she originated, takes readers along for the ride with the publication of her new book Drive: Stories from Somewhere in the Middle of Nowhere.
Sharon shares her family’s adventures as first-time RV users, talks about parenting her two children through crazy times as she and her new wife, stage manager Martha Donaldson, figure out that the safest way to get her youngest child out to California is to hit the road (with their four pets along for the ride.) Along the way, they juggle Sharon’s missing her show and feeling jealous while Martha contends with marathon Zoom meetings rehearsing Diana the Musical. They survive one major run-in with a fire hydrant and a near death experience with one of the cats. We learn about Sharon’s parents and how their humor and grit made her who she is today and Sharon’s love of performing and how she has succeeded in an industry known for gut-wrenching insecurity for artists—with resiliency, empathy and kindness. And we get Sharon’s strategies — about staying positive and resilient, about using humor and taking it one step at a time to just move forward. The book takes us up to Come from Away’s re–opening in September, 2021 and the author’s hope for the return of a better, safer Broadway.
“Sharon Wheatley takes us on a wild journey through her Broadway life, her second marriage, the death of her parents, a cross-country RV ride, and so much more with warmth, humility, her trademark humor—and flat-out good writing. You’ll want to finish it in one sitting.”
