CBS’s hit talk show The Talk gratings continue to grow!
Created by Sara Gilbert the show has gone through several changes and hosts before finally hitting its stride. However, Sara says one of the biggest secrets on the shows success is it does NOT get political. (Are you listening Barbara Walters?)
“We all respect Barbara Walters so much and she has had a great show,” says The Talk’s creator and co-host Sara Gilbert. “I’m flattered by any comparison between the shows. I think we should be so lucky that we have such a successful run. But our show is not political we are a little more girlfriends talking. I’m not that political. I’m political when it comes to social issue and civil rights. When I came up with the show idea, I really wanted to do the kind of show that was what my friends were really talking about. I feel like this is the kind of stuff we talk about. So we are using things like pop culture to get into that.”
Confessing it took time for the show to hit its stride, Sara says the key to its success is it is constantly changing and evolving. Something Sara has had to do herself.
“I was the most extreme private person. I came from a culture where celebrities were really quiet about their lives and times changed. Everyone is more open now because the audience wants to know more. So now, people are more willing to share. I guess I changed with the times.”
With a lot of celebrity friends herself, that are still very private, Sara says she doesn’t get in too much trouble talking about their lives because of the good nature of the show.
“I have got a couple of calls, where friends ask will you tread lightly but I think people know we don’t really trash people. We are not haters,” she says. “Anytime we have had a line or two in that direction we had said we don’t want to do that again. It never feels right, we are not out for anyone so we don’t get a lot of those notes from celebrities.
Barbara is listening, says one ABC insider. “Joy and Elizabeth are the two most political people on the show. When they are both gone they will not be replaced by other hosts so politically motivated.”
