Madonna just returned from her week-long trip overseas in Malawi where she runs a charity, Raising Malawi. While there, Madonna decided to write a letter to the Malawi President, Joyce Banda…maybe not such a great idea. The letter had many errors, the most glaring one being when Madonna addressed the Prez simply as “Joyce”.
President Banda was not thrilled with Madonna’s appearance in the country and the VIP treatment she was receiving. “She just came unannounced and proceeded to villages and made poor people dance for her. And immigration officials opened the VIP lounge for her just because previously she enjoyed the VIP status,” Banda said.
Banda is upset with Madonna for going back on her word to build an all-girls school, deciding to build 10 community schools instead. “Madonna came to Malawi to build a school, an academy like the one Oprah (Winfrey) build in South Africa, but she changed her mind.”
Before Madonna left the country, Banda stripped her of her VIP status, forcing her to stand in line with everyone else at airport security. I bet Madonna had some choice words about that experience.
Why is President Banda so upset with Madonna? Was it really about the schools? Was it about her adoption of two Malawian children (which Banda was very unhappy about)? Or could it be because Madge hasn’t invited Banda to dance for her?
