Rumors started swirling on Wednesday (November 14) about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s plans for the holidays. While the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were expected to travel to the U.S. for Thanksgiving, it was being reported the couple would also spend Christmas in Los Angeles, as well. Some royal watchers took this as a sign of disrespect towards Queen Elizabeth as the monarch hosts an annual Christmas celebration at her Sandringham Estate.
After speculation began to run rampant online, Buckingham Palace released a statement confirmed Meghan and Harry would be skipping the Queen’s Christmas celebration this year. Though some may believe they the Sussexes are trying to avoid a run in with Prince William and Kate Middleton after Harry confirmed those rift rumors, the new parents actually just want to spend Archie’s first Christmas with Meghan’s mom Doria Ragland.
“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are looking forward to extended family time towards the end of this month. Having spent the last two Christmases at Sandringham, [the couple] will spend the holiday this year, as a new family, with the Duchess’ mother Doria,” the spokesperson explained.
The spokesperson also made sure to note that the Queen fully supports their decision to spend Christmas with Meghan’s side of the family. “This decision is in line with precedent set previously by other members of the Royal Family, and has the support of Her Majesty The Queen,” the statement reads.
It’s widely believed the Sussexes will stay with Meghan’s mother in the Duchess’ native Los Angeles, however, the palace won’t confirm their travel plans for security purposes. The Duke and Duchess won’t be traveling on official royal business, so, the palace won’t comment on their private travel agenda.

Today, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex joined Her Majesty The Queen and members of @TheRoyalFamily at the National Service of Remembrance at the Cenotaph to commemorate and honour the men and women who have lost their lives in conflict. As shared at last night’s Festival of Remembrance, this quote embodies the sacrifice of those that serve: • “When you go home, tell them of us and say, for your tomorrow, we gave our today.” • For more details of this week of Remembrance and their Royal Highness’s recognition for those who serve, please see previous posts. #WeWillRememberThem #Remembrance Photo © PA
