This past week has been busy for Meghan Markle. Not only did she announce she’d be stepping down as a senior royal, along with her husband Prince Harry, the Duchess of Sussex also reportedly signed a voiceover deal with Disney. Though Meghan has not officially confirmed the news herself, The Times reports the former Suits actress won’t take a paycheck for her work with the House of Mouse. Instead, Meghan asked Disney to make a donation to Elephants Without Borders, an organization which supports wildlife conservation.
Shortly after news of the voiceover deal broke, a video of Prince Harry chatting with Disney CEO Bog Iger at The Lion King premiere back in July 2019 resurfaced. While Meghan meets with fellow royalty Beyonce, her husband appears to ask Iger if we would ever consider Meghan for voiceover work.
In the resurfaced video, which was shared by the Shade Room, Harry appears to tell Iger “You know she does voiceovers?” to which the CEO replies “Oh really? Ah.” Harry doesn’t stop there, either. He then shoots his shot on Meghan’s behalf, asking Iger “Did you know that?” to which Iger responds “I did not know that.” Harry continues by telling Iger he “seemed surprised, but yeah, she’s really interested.” Though Harry doesn’t explicitly say she’s interested in doing voiceovers in Disney, it’s definitely implied. Iger then adds, “Sure…we’d love to try.”
Few other details are known about Meghan’s deal with Disney, as well as the Sussex’s standing with the other members of the royal family. Their announcement explaining their decision to step down as senior royals reportedly left the House of Windsor shocked. “We have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution,” they shared on Instagram last week. “We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen. It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment.”
Meghan and Harry added they will continue to “honour [their] duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages,” despite plans to divide their time between the United Kingdom and North America. This decision “will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity.”
Harry is set to meet with Queen Elizabeth, Prince Charles, and Prince William to discuss the royal schism on Monday (January 13). Meghan, who is back in Canada with Archie, will join the meeting virtually should the time difference allow.
