Sam Smith opened up about the challenges of changing their pronouns.
While supporting the release of their new single “To Die For,” the soulful singer spoke compassionately about their experience with being misgendered since deciding to use preferred pronouns. Speaking with Zane Lowe in an interview on Friday (February 14), Smith approached the topic with a sense of compassion for those who are finding it difficult to adjust.
“What’s hard is people changing their vocabulary; that’s very, very difficult. It takes time. Everyone messes up. I’m going to be misgendered to the day I die,” Smith said. “This is going to take a long, long time for people to not use gender in their vocabulary.”
Back in September 2019, the Grammy-winning vocalist officially revealed “they/them” as their preferred pronouns, rather than “he/him,” in an emotional announcement on Instagram. After “a lifetime of being at war with my gender,” Smith revealed they made the choice to feel more “comfortable” with themselves.
At the time, they wrote: “I’m so excited and privileged to be surrounded by people that support me in this decision but I’ve been very nervous about announcing this because I care too much about what people think but f—k it! I understand there will be many mistakes and mis gendering but all I ask is you please please try. I hope you can see me like I see myself now.”
