Sharon Osbourne is not a fan of John Legend’s revised version of “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.”
Ever since Legend and Kelly Clarkson opted to change a few of the controversial lyrics to Frank Loesser’s 1949 original song for their new rendition, fans of the Christmas classic have been up in arms. Now, Osbourne has placed herself amongst them.
The 67-year-old made her objections to Legend’s “ridiculous” decision during Monday’s (November 4) broadcast of The Talk, and even likened doing so to defacing a masterpiece. “What would John Legend do, if in 40 years, somebody wanted to, you know, times change, re-record one of his songs, and there was some group that found it offensive, and somebody just went, ‘Oh, I can change the lyrics on that,’” she said.
“To change an innocent lyric, to what is it, ‘Your mind and your body?’ What the hell are you on? That’s ridiculous,” she continued. “I have to tell you, I love John Legend. I love John Legend’s wife, his family. He’s an amazing artist that I really respect. Why do you do this? That’s not right.”
As it was revealed last week, the Voice costars are attempting to make their version, slated to appear on Legend’s upcoming Christmas album, less problematic by replacing verses that would otherwise be considered offensive in the era of #MeToo. An example of one of the alleged lyric alterations reads: “I really can’t stay (Baby, it’s cold outside)/ I’ve gotta go away (I can call you a ride)/ This evening has been (so glad that you dropped in)/ So very nice (time spent with you is paradise)/ My mother will start to worry (I’ll call a car and tell ‘em to hurry).”
