We have a royal name for the new royal prince!
The world finally got a first glimpse of the Royal Baby yesterday as William and Kate finally emerged from the hospital. And now, one day later, that little bundle of royalty has a new name… George Alexander Louis.
Kensington Palace said in a short statement: ‘The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to announce that they have named their son George Alexander Louis.
‘The baby will be known as His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge.’
By naming their son George it would seem that the couple have followed tradition. However, royal sources say the baby’s names are not supposed to be symbolic but that the couple genuinely like them.
Six King Georges have worn the crown since the German-born George I, the first Hanoverian king of Great Britain, acceded to the throne in 1714.
The first name of the last King George – George VI – was actually Albert and he was known to his family as ‘Bertie’ but he selected George – his fourth name – to use as Sovereign.
George VI chose George in honor of his father George V and to create the impression of stability after the scandal caused by the abdication of his brother Edward VIII.
On Tuesday July 23, one day after his birth, Prince of Cambridge made his worldwide debut. (Palace reps said in a Tuesday evening statement the “Duchess is to be discharged from the hospital.”)
“He’s got a good pair of lungs on him that’s for sure. He’s a good boy, he’s quite heavy,” said William, flushed and wearing a blue oxford shirt. “It’s the first time we’ve seen him, really we haven’t had a proper chance to catch up.”
“It’s such a special time. I think any parent probably sort of knows what this feeling feels like.” William added of his late arrival: “I’ll remind him of his tardiness when he’s a bit older!”
Said William: “He’s got her looks, thankfully,” added Kate!
Kate and William acknowledged the work of the staff at St. Mary’s in a statement early Tuesday. “We know it has been a very busy period for the hospital and we would like to thank everyone — staff, patients and visitors — for their understanding during this time.”
The new family is now at home at Kensington Palace.
