Britney Spears and her younger sister, Jamie Lynn Spears, are having a very public war of words.
The drama between the estranged siblings exploded over Jamie Lynn’s new tell-all book, Things I Should Have Said. Britney called her sister a “scum person” who made up “lies” to sell a “Hollywood book” in a scathing post Friday. Earlier in the day, Jamie Lynn accused Britney of lying about her in a different post, saying it’s led to her family getting death threats.
Britney, 40, wrote on Twitter that Jamie Lynn, 30, “stooped to a new level of LOW” by claiming in her book that her sister exhibited “erratic,” “paranoid” and “spiraling” behavior and once “locked them in a room with a knife,” leaving Jamie Lynn “afraid.” Jamie Lynn also claimed they got in a fight during the pandemic in which Britney allegedly “came at me,” screaming and cursing in front of Jamie Lynn’s two children.
“You’ve stooped to a whole new level of LOW,” Britney wrote on Twitter. “I’ve never been around you ever with a knife or would I ever even think to do such!!”
She urged the Zoey 101 alum to “please, please stop with these crazy lies for the Hollywood books.” Britney added: “Only a scum person would make up such things about someone.”
Britney also took issue that they got into a blowout with their kids present.
“Around the kids???? Jamie Lynn seriously???? Come on,” Britney wrote, calling Jamie Lynn’s claims low blows.
This back and forth has been going on since Jamie Lynn’s interview with ABC Newsaired on Wednesday. In it, the youngest Spears talked about how much she loved her sister. Jamie Lynn claimed she tried to help Britney get out of her controversial conservatorship — but suggested Britney wasn’t doing enough to end it herself. Jamie Lynn also denied having access to Britney’s fortune, which was largely depleted through the conservatorship.
After that interview, Britney slammed Jamie Lynn on Twitter for selling “a book at my expense.”
Britney said it bothered her that her sister said Britney’s “behavior was out of control. She was never around me much 15 years ago at that time,” leading up to Britney being placed in her conservatorship. Jamie Lynn had a teen pregnancy the same year.
“My family ruined my dreams 100 billion percent and try to make me look like the crazy one,” Britney wrote, adding, “My family loves to pull me down and hurt me always so I am disgusted with them.”
Britney went on to drag her sister, saying the actress and songwriter “never had to work for anything.”
That led Jamie Lynn to post her own social media statement — sans emoji emphasis — defending herself.
“It’s become exhausting when conversations, and texts we have in private don’t match what you post on social media,” Jamie Lynn wrote to Britney. “I know you’re going through a lot and I never want to diminish that, but I also can’t diminish myself.”
She continued: “Quite frankly, the things being said are absolutely not the truth, and I have to clarify that, because now it’s getting harder for me to rationalize to my oldest daughter why our family continues to get death threats, as a result of their aunt’s vague and accusatory posts, especially when we know she could tell the truth, and put an end to all of it in one second if she wanted to.”
Jamie Lynn added, “I hate to burst my sister’s bubble, but my book is not about her. I can’t help that I was born a Spears too, and that some of my experiences involve my sister. I’ve worked hard since before I was even a teenager, and I’ve built my career in spite of just being someone’s little sister.”
Britney’s been crystal clear all along about her feelings regarding Jamie Lynn’s memoir. When the book was originally announced last summer, it had the title I Must Confess — a lyric from Britney’s hit song, “…Baby One More Time.” That led Britney, then at the peak of the epic battle to end her 13-year conservatorship, to publicly criticize her sister for trying to, again, try to profit off Britney’s success. That, in turn, led to Jamie Lynn changing the book title.
But it didn’t stop Jamie Lynn from publishing the book. And while it’s about Jamie Lynn’s life — she also shares about her teen pregnancy and daughter Maddie’s near-fatal ATV accident — the book does share intimate details about her famous sibling against her wishes. And this comes at a time when Britney has just been freed and is getting her life back.
