Cruise Lines Seeking Volunteers For Mock Cruises To Test COVID Protocols! Before cruise lines can start operating in the United States again, they must prove to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that they can prevent an outbreak of COVID-19. To test out their coronavirus protocols, cruise lines are asking for volunteers to go on mock cruises in the coming months.
Royal Caribbean recently put out a request for volunteers and said that over 100,000 people have already signed up.
“Royal Caribbean has some of the most loyal guests in the cruise industry, and we have been overjoyed with their interest to take part in our simulated trial sailings,” a spokesperson told Fox News. “This week alone, we have received more than 5,000 emails, not including the tweets, comments, and messages across social media.”
The cruise line did not say when the voyages will occur or how many of the volunteers will get to participate in the mock cruises. According to a report by Cruise Industry News, the Mariner and Navigator of the Seas will be used to conduct the tests. It is unknown what port the ships will originate from, but they will likely dock at CocoCay, Royal Caribbean’s private island in the Bahamas.
The CDC said that cruise lines must conduct at least 15 simulated voyages as part of the process to gain certification to operate with passengers.
Other cruise lines have not revealed their plans to run mock cruises to comply with the new guidance from the CDC. The agency said that the decision to allow a cruiseliner to return to service will be made on a ship-by-ship basis.
