With more than 30 years of experience in the entertainment industry, Mayim Bialik has heard many opinions about her and her work. The Big Bang Theorystar and now-Jeopardy! cohost recently opened up on her podcast, Mayim Bialik’s Breakdown, about what it’s like being on the receiving end of unwarranted comments. Unfortunately, fellow actor Justin Long immediately related.
It all went down during Justin’s appearance on Mayim’s podcast when he revealed why he was excited to be on. According to The Break-Up actor, he and his family are “big” Jeopardy! fans. Without hesitating, Justin took the opportunity to ask Mayim if she ever heard that she was favored over Jeopardy! legend Ken Jennings, who cohosts with her. “Sometimes [and] sometimes I get ‘We don’t prefer you to Ken,’” she said.
It was then that Justin made an observation about how uniquely Hollywood celebrities are treated. “Isn’t that wild — well, it’s the only profession that I can think of — where people will tell you deeply insulting things but with a big smile?” Justin said.
“[People will tell you] exactly how they feel,” Mayim responded. “Like ‘I saw you in magazine. I was very confused. You looked pretty.’ I get that a lot.”
“Oh, jeez … This sounds like I’m bragging but,” Justin started. “You’re better looking in person?!” Mayim ended his sentence. “Yes, that’s a tough one ‘cause then you think ‘Well, what do I care what you like? That means to millions of other people I’m worse looking,” Justin concluded.
After hearing the two go back and forth sharing their unpleasant experiences, fans were quick to rally around them with heartfelt messages in the Instagram comments section. “Love both of you!!!!! Xoxo,” one person wrote. “I always think of you as beautiful, Ms Mayim,” another added. “Wow!!! The fact they don’t find that insulting, tells you cloth they’re cut from,” a different fan said.
This isn’t the first time Mayim has received candid feedback from viewers. In a different Mayim Bialik’s Breakdown episode, the Call Me Kat actress was joined by her fellow Big Bang Theory costar Simon Helberg. The two exchanged stories of moments when people would approach them openly expressing dislike of the popular CBS sitcom, which went off the air in 2019 after 12 seasons.
“Famously, the introduction that people would tend to make to me, particularly when the show was on, they would come up and they would say, ‘Listen, I hate your show,” Simon said to Mayim and her cohost/boyfriend Jonathan Cohen. “People would say ‘I don’t like your show but my grandmother does,'” she added.
