John Mayer went on an impromptu tangent about going to a fan’s hotel room during the Elmont, NY, stop of his “Sob Rock” tour Saturday.
Fifteen minutes into his two-hour performance at UBS Arena, Mayer pointed out that someone in the audience had “a makeshift sign on their iPhone” that read, “Room 2307.”
“That’s all it said. That’s all the information I was supplied with,” he quipped.
“In the back of my mind I was thinking I’d have to go to every local hotel — I’d assume it would be a hotel — knocking on the door of 2307 until I found the person who had the sign ‘2307.’”
The quick-thinking singer and former playboy, 44, then hypothesized how the rendezvous would play out.
“I’d say, ‘Can I come in?’ and you’d say, ‘I guess so,’” he said. “And then I’d walk inside the room and I would sit on a surface, and you would probably sit on a surface not all that close to me because again, you didn’t expect that this would happen.
“And then I would just sit there and I’d go, ‘Can I get a water?’ ‘Oh yeah, let me get you one,’” he continued. “And then it would be silence for like two minutes, and then you would say, ‘I really didn’t think that you were gonna show up.’”
Mayer admitted he would “just love the awkwardness of it” before asking the crowd to join him in “looking after the show.”
The Grammy winner’s concert at the new Belmont Park arena saw him perform 18 songs including hit singles “Your Body Is a Wonderland,” “Gravity” and “New Light,” as well as deep cuts “Walt Grace’s Submarine Test, January 1967” and “In the Blood.”
After wrapping up his rescheduled “Sob Rock” tour dates Tuesday at Boston’s TD Garden, Mayer will embark on a summer trek with Dead & Company that kicks off June 11 at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles and concludes July 16 at Citi Field in Queens, NY.
