The Presidential Inaugural Committee announced the news on Thursday (January 14), revealing that the “Born This Way” superstar will perform the national anthem at the 90-minute Celebrating America television special in Washington D.C., with the Latin superstar expected to deliver a musical performance of her own.
“I am deeply honored to be joining @BidenInaugural on January 20 to sing the National Anthem and celebrate the historic inauguration of @JoeBiden and @KamalaHarris! 💙” reads a message from the Star Is Born actress, who has been a staunch and outspoken supporter of the Biden-Harris administration in 2020.
Lopez is the latest star to join the growing lineup of highly-anticipated performances set for the January 20 event, which will include presentations from previously-announced performers Demi Lovato, Jon Bon Jovi, Justin Timberlake, and Ant Clemons.
The inauguration gig marks another major event for Lopez, who co-headlined last year’s Super Bowl halftime show alongside Shakira with an empowering Latinx-inspired presentation.
“They represent one clear picture of the grand diversity of our great nation and will help honor and celebrate the time-honored traditions of the presidential inauguration as President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Harris take the oath of office on the West Front of the U.S. Capitol,” inaugural committee CEO Tony Allen said of the star-studded lineup in a statement. “They are also committed to the President-elect and the Vice-President-elect’s steadfast vision of a new chapter in our American story in which we are an America united in overcoming the deep divisions and challenges facing our people, unifying the country, and restoring the soul of our nation.”
Celebrating America will be hosted by veteran actor Tom Hanks and aired across all major networks at 8:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday, January 20.
The 51-year-old “Waiting for Tonight” superstar got candid in an interview with Elle. Here’s what she had to say…
On her postponed wedding to Alex Rodriguez: “We postponed the wedding twice. We had planned what we really, really wanted to do, [but] I don’t know if we’ll be able to re-create that. We canceled it, and since then we haven’t really talked about it. There’s no rush. We want to do it right when we can do it. We just have to wait to see where the world lands.”
On voting: “I’ve told everybody who works around me, all my family, ‘Don’t even talk to me if you haven’t voted.’ The world right now is so confusing to me, because I feel like we all know that things need to change. It doesn’t matter if you’re Republican or Democrat, if you’re looking at the world right now, you know that we can do better—you know that. We can’t stay with this administration, we just can’t. It’s the definition of insanity.”
On using her Super Bowl performance as a political platform: “It was super important to me, knowing that I was going to have such a big stage, a big audience, to really say some things about what was going on in this country with Latinos: people in cages, and moms and daughters being ripped apart from one another…the idea of using the song ‘Let’s Get Loud’ [was about] never staying quiet and always using your voice against any injustices in this world. I feel like sometimes people act like it’s not our country, too. It was very important to me to put in ‘Born in the U.S.A.’ and have my daughter sing it, because she was [born here] and I was, too. My mom came here. She was not born here; she was born in Puerto Rico, and [my parents] moved to New York. We are proud Puerto Ricans and Latinos, but we’re proud Americans, too.”
