Michael Strahan Isn’t Buying Chris Harrison’s Apology! Michael Strahan says “Bachelor” host Chris Harrison gave a weak apology on “Good Morning America”Thursday for his decision to defend some racist behavior by one of the show’s contestants.
“His apology is his apology, but it felt like I got nothing more than a surface response on any of this,” said Strahan, who grilled Harrison about comments he made in an earlier interview on “Extra,” conducted by former “Bachelorette” Rachel Lindsay.
Harrison offered the mea culpa for telling Lindsay — who was the first black “Bachelorette” — that “Bachelor” contestant Rachael Kirkconnell deserved “a little grace, a little understanding” after she was photographed at a plantation-themed party.
“I am an imperfect man, I made a mistake and I own that,” he told Strahan on “GMA.” “I believe that mistake doesn’t reflect who I am or what I stand for.”
Harrison’s comments weren’t enough for Strahan, who sensed he was talking to a man who only wanted to save his job.
Harrison recently announced he was “stepping aside” from ABC, which airs the long-running dating show, and told Strahan he hopes to one day return to “The Bachelor.”
“This interview is not the finish line,” Harrison said. “There is much more work to be done.”
After the remote video interview with Harrison was done, the former Giants defensive end quickly sacked the host’s motives.
“Obviously he’s a man who wants to clearly stay on the show,” Strahan added, “but only time will tell if there’s any meaning behind his words.”
Harrison has been under fire since he dismissed criticisms of Kirkconnell’s behavior — she had been accused of “liking” photos of people standing in front of a Confederate flag in addition to attending the antebellum-themed party.
“Antebellum parties are not OK,” Harrison said Thursday morning. “Past, present, future, knowing what that represents is unacceptable.”
ABC, which airs both “The Bachelor” and “GMA,” hasn’t revealed whether Harrison’s leave from the show will turn into something more, but he has been replaced by former NFL player Emmanuel Acho as host of the upcoming “After the Final Rose” special.
“That’s not our place to tell people what they can and can’t be offended about. That’s wrong. And that’s part of the problem. So please stop saying that I did nothing wrong. That’s not true,” she said last week.
