Selena Gomez Calls Out Social Media CEOs After Riots! On Wednesday (January 6), the pop star took to Twitter to call out social media platforms and their CEOs for the role they played in the insurrection that took place at the U.S. Capitol building. The riot, which is believed to have been organized on Facebook, aimed to stop the 2020 presidential election results from being certified.
“Toady is the result of allowing people with hate in their hearts to use platforms that should be used to bring together and allow people to build community,” Gomez wrote in her message. “Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Google, Mark Zukerberg, Sheryl Sandberg, Jack Dorsey, Sundar Pichai, Susan Wojcicki – you have all failed the American people today, and I hope you’re going to fix things moving forward.”
Following the riot, both Twitter and Facebook announced President Trump would be suspended from their platforms. Twitter informed the president that any further violations would “result in permanent suspension of the @realDonaldTrump account.”
“As a result of the unprecedented and ongoing violent situation in Washington, D.C., we have required the removal of three [President Trump] Tweets that were posted earlier today for repeated and severe violations of our Civic Integrity policy,” Twitter continued. “This means that the account of [President Trump] will be locked for 12 hours following the removal of these Tweets. If the Tweets are not removed, the account will remain locked.”
Guy Rosen, Facebook’s VP of integrity, also released a statement about their decision to ban the president from its platform. “This is an emergency situation and we are taking appropriate emergency measures, including removing President Trump’s video,” Rosen wrote. “We removed it because on balance we believe it contributes to rather than diminishes the risk of ongoing violence.”
