Despite moving to California two years ago now, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have been very reserved with what events they attend. They have not gone to an awards show together, not even the Oscars or its glitzy Vanity Fair after party. And this evening, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex weren’t among the A-list attendees at tonight’s Met Gala. It’s unclear whether they were invited, although their attending the event would have required more security than the typical celeb.
Meghan and Harry likely are spending tonight in their Montecito, California home, keeping a low profile with their two children Archie and Lili. The Duke and Duchess were last photographed out on Friday, Harry playing polo with Nacho Figueras at the Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet Club.
Meghan dressed in a chic but casual look for the occasion, pairing a white blazer with black shorts or a mini dress.
Meghan and Harry were last seen out at the Invictus Games in The Hague, the Netherlands in April. Meghan leaned into her pre-royal style during her last event there. She paired a Valentino mini dress with a red lip. Bold lip colors weren’t prohibited when Meghan was a working senior royal family member though. Meghan just chose to wear more neutral colors.
In a summer 2018 interview with ELLE.com, royal etiquette expert Myka Meier, Beaumont Etiquette‘s founder/director and a British-American trained by a former member of the Queen’s household, explained why Meghan’s royal makeup was in “much more muted tones, so we see much more natural colors” before she stepped back from her working royal family member role in 2020.
“We’ve seen her in the past in red lips and now we don’t,” Meier said of Meghan in 2018. “She’s wearing that light, neutral pink that is favored in the palaces and other royals.”
However, Meghan could’ve still worn berry and bright red lip colors under protocol: “She’s totally fine to wear whatever makeup she feels is appropriate for the occasion,” Meier said. “And I think we still will see her in the future playing with a little bit more color.”
